Swedish Hospital Nurse Alumna Leaves Legacy Gift

As a fresh-faced student beginning her studies at the Swedish Covenant Hospital (SCH) School of Nursing in 1956, Joan Anderson was no stranger to Swedish Hospital. She was born there 18 years prior and grew up in the neighborhood surrounding the Hospital. With her SCH Nursing school classmates she spent three years studying, living and working at Swedish Hospital and when she graduated in 1959, Joan (Jo) began working as a Registered Nurse. Joan soon married George Goodwater, had a family and moved to Racine Wisconsin, but never gave up her love of nursing and commitment to helping others. She worked for over 20 years as an administrator in a medical center and when she retired to Florida, was still helping others by knitting and sewing hats, mittens, and blankets for local charities.

With her strong ties to Swedish Hospital, Joan became a member of the Foundation’s Heritage society because she wanted to leave a legacy of helping others.  Heritage Society members are loyal donors who name the hospital as a beneficiary in their estate plans. Joan asked that her gift be used to help Swedish patients and community members most in need, so that even with her passing, Joan’s generosity of spirit lives on.
