Family to complete triathlon together for Team SCH

At the age of 16, Kendra McCoy already has a few triathlons under her belt. She began competing after watching her three younger sisters participate. On August 27, Kendra will compete alongside her sisters, her parents, and Team SCH athletes in the Chicago Triathlon in support of Swedish Covenant Hospital.

After Kendra’s first triathlon, she fell in love. A former swimmer, Kendra enjoys being outside and is drawn to the challenge of the sport.

“You can push yourself and you can strive to do what you want to do and its fun for me,” Kendra said.

Kendra, along with her sisters Morgan, 13, Leah, 11, and Allie, 8, train for the triathlon through their swim club, the Iguanas. This year, Kendra will be competing in the Super Sprint at the Chicago Triathlon, while her sisters participate in the kid’s race. Their parents, Sara Rummelhoff, who works as a nurse at Swedish Covenant Hospital, and John will be participating too.

“I think the triathlon is a great way to do something as a family. Their goal is just to complete the course, and it teaches them endurance and perseverance,” Sara said.

Now in its third year, Team SCH brings together athletes to raise funds on behalf of their participation in a race. This year, Team SCH will be participating in the Chicago Triathlon on August 27 and the Chicago Half Marathon & 5K on September 24.

This is Sara’s third year participating with Team SCH. In previous years, she ran a 5K and a half marathon with Team SCH.

“Team SCH is an excellent way to raise awareness of Swedish Covenant Hospital and encourage an active lifestyle among our employees, and the community,” Sara said. “I love Swedish and any opportunity to promote the hospital and the great work it does for the community.”

Athletes will be raising funds to increase access to mammograms for uninsured, low-income women through the Community Breast Health Program. This program provides free cancer detection services to women who face the greatest challenges accessing care due to financial, cultural, and language barriers. Last year, more than 1,300 women received free breast cancer screenings through the program.
