Suzanne C. McCormick

Suzanne McCormick was born in Chicago but had the unique experience of growing up on two continents, in two very different worlds.  Her upbringing and education were split between her home in Chicago and her family ancestral home in the Dolomite region of northern Italy.   Grade school, high school and college years were divided between European and American cultures, with time spent living in Italy, France, Switzerland and the United States.  She received her B.S. degree from Loyola University of Chicago, with a major in Modern Languages and a minor in Education. She is fluent in English, Italian and French.

Following college, she began a career as an Italian/English interpreter and was hired by Sullivan Language School, a national language training company, to open its first Chicago office. It was as Director of that School that she accepted an assignment to translate a computerized health-evaluation system from English to French and to Italian and was subsequently hired to supervise the installation of the system in Canada and in Italy. It was through the course of this work that she met her husband, Dr. James McCormick.

Suzanne is currently Director of Science Heritage, a company which has produced museum quality replicas of rare 18th and 19th century scientific instruments and corresponding educational materials. Her community involvements are many and varied.  Along with Dr. McCormick, she has been part of the Swedish Hospital world for almost 50 years, actively participating in its history and evolution.  She has served as a Member and Past Officer of the Hospital Women’s Board, as Co-Chair of the Hospital Gala, and as a participant in numerous annual Gala Committees.   She and Dr. McCormick established the “James and Suzanne McCormick Montessori Childcare Center” on the Hospital campus to serve the needs of Hospital employees, as well as those of the surrounding community.

With a continued appreciation for foreign languages and cultural diversity, Suzanne is active in several cultural organizations in Chicago.  She serves on the Women’s Board of the Alliance Française and is a member of the International Women’s Associates of Chicago – an organization for which, over the course of many years, she has held numerous leadership roles on various Committees, including Membership, Finance, Development and Strategic Planning.  She has also held various Board positions, including that of President.

Suzanne has two children – Jeremy, an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Chief of Foot and Ankle Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis, and Amanda, Sr. Vice President of Marketing at JOOR, a global fashion technology company in New York.  Suzanne lives in Lincolnwood and enjoys traveling to New York and to St Louis to share time with her children and grandchildren. She also continues to travel regularly to her home in Italy where each year she and Dr. McCormick spent meaningful and memorable time together.
